Academic and Research Institutions

Collaborative innovation aims at establishing research partnerships in the public and private sector, and is a cornerstone of our R&D strategy. Leveraging joint technologies and complementary strengths is a catalyst for development and market growth. In this respect, we support collaborative innovation participating in numerous research programs.

Tattoo Recognition

A research project with Michigan State University - Since 2009, Morpho has been working in partnership with the Michigan State University (MSU) to advance research in multiple areas, including biometric tattoo recognition technology. The project seeks to further enhance the capabilities of the tattoo matching software licensed to Morpho by the university's Pattern Recognition and Image Processing (PRIP) Laboratory. As a result of this research, MorphoTrak submitted a tattoo matching algorithm to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the Tattoo Recognition Technology – Challenge (Tatt-C) evaluation. MorphoTrak's algorithm placed first in this evaluation. The algorithm successfully found different instances of the same tattoo on the same subject, collected over time, and also excelled at finding a small region of interest within a larger tattoo, as well as determining whether an image contained a tattoo.

Altered Finger Detection

A research project with Michigan State University - A second area of research is improvement in the ability to detect altered fingers. Fingerprint obfuscation refers to the deliberate alteration of the fingerprint pattern by an individual (via obliteration, distortion, or imitation) for the purpose of masking his identity. This has been performed by many criminals, including John Dillinger. MSU has developed techniques to identify cases of fingerprint obfuscation.

Additional Research

Ongoing research with West Virginia University – In 2015, MorphoTrak launched a research partnership with West Virginia University. The university's location near the Biometrics Technology Center in Clarksburg (U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation/U.S. Department of Defense), as well as MorphoTrak's new facility in Morgantown, will allow the partners to drive technology advances that will benefit the entire biometric industry.

Membership in the Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR) – MorphoTrak further demonstrates its commitment to innovation through its long-standing membership in CITeR.  CITeR is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) that advances human identification capabilities through coordinated university research. West Virginia University and Michigan State University are two of the academic sites.
